2002

2002 (Salt Lake City): On February 24, 2002, at the E Center in West Valley City, Utah, Canada defeated the host United States 5-2 to claim Olympic gold—their first in men's hockey since 1952, ending a 50-year drought.

The star-studded final featured future Hall of Famers on both sides. The USA struck first with Tony Amonte's breakaway goal, but Canada responded with tallies from Paul Kariya and Jarome Iginla to lead 2-1 after the first period.

In the second, Brian Rolston tied it for the Americans on a power play, before Joe Sakic restored Canada's lead at 3-2.

The third period saw Canada pull away: Iginla scored his second, followed by Sakic's insurance marker (set up by a clever turnover forced by Iginla). Sakic sealed the 5-2 victory with an empty-netter, finishing with two goals and two assists while earning tournament MVP honors.

Martin Brodeur backstopped Canada with a strong performance in net, as the team outshot the USA 45-23. The win sparked nationwide celebrations in Canada and remains one of the most iconic moments in Olympic hockey history.
